Metro's Services for Parents of Children and Adolescents (All free
of charge) -
Helpline

Metro Helpline provides support, information, and referral to community resources
and to NAMI's own services for children with mental health issues and their families.
Information packets are mailed to individuals and family members who are looking
for further information about NAMI's supports and services, mental illnesses,
medication, treatment, and community resources. -
The
Parent Matching Program The Parent Matching Program connects, by telephone,
experienced parents of children with mental health issues with parents of children
who have been recently diagnosed or who are facing new challenges. Parent Matching
offers parents the opportunity to talk to a parent who has "been there"
and who can offer emotional support, let them know that they are not alone, offer
coping strategies, the benefit of experience in negotiating the mental health
and special education systems, and connection to community resources. Call the
Helpline at 212-684-3264 to request a Parent Match. -
Your
Child's Mental Health Your Child's Mental Health is a monthly lunch-hour
conference call presentation for parents and other interested individuals. Calls
are held on the third Wednesday of each month from noon to 1pm. For each call,
a local expert provides a live presentation on a mental health topic related to
children or on a local mental health resource. Topics include ADD/ADHD, depression,
bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, special education, summer camps, and other
community resources. After the presentation, parents have the opportunity to ask
questions. To participate, dial toll free 1-866-228-9900 and then enter passcode

Parents
of Children & Adolescents Facilitators:
Nancy Parker, Gordie Cooke, and Mary Ann Ceron (Bilingual Facilitator) Meeting
twice a month, this group is for parents and family members of children and teens
with severe emotional/behavioral disorders (SED) or mental illnesses. This peer-run
self-help group offers support and practical information. Participants share experiences
and learn how others cope. Meetings are held the second Monday of the month from
6:00 - 7:30 pm, and on the first Saturday from 12:30 - 2:00 pm at the NAMI office.
Interested parties feel free to attend, call the Helpline (212.684.3264) with
questions.

Family
to Family Class: A NAMI National curriculum developed by a psychologist who
is also the parent of an adult child with mental illness- classes offered in the
Spring and in the Fall in convenient locations. The NAMI Family-to-Family course
is a 12-week program taught by trained family members. It provides information
and practical skills in a supportive environment and is an opportunity for family
members of individuals with major mental illness to learn helpful skills for coping
more effectively. Course topics include: how diagnoses are made; medication updates;
developing empathy for your family member's experience; letting go of guilt; self-care;
and how to communicate more effectively with your family member.
