New York City Depression Initiative

Currently in New York City, two initiatives focused on depression have been launched:

Have you asked your doctor for a simple test on depression? The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's (DOHMH) promotes the use of the PHQ-9 depression screening tool to be used by all New York City primary care doctors. For more information about this initiative visit www.nyc.gov/health

New York Business Group on Health (NYBGH) is focusing its efforts on ensuring that depression is addressed in the business community and among health insurance providers. To solidify their efforts and their goals, NYBGH created a New York Metro Mental Health Collaborative Charter for which health plans, behavioral health plans, EAPs, and businesses can sign-on to speak with one voice to work together to improve the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of depression. NAMI-NYC Metro as well as DOHMH have signed on to the charter.
" NAMI-NYC Metro is working with both DOHMH and NYBGH to encourage New York City employers and residents to adopt these initiatives. In 2006 both NYBGH and DOHMH co-sponsored NAMI's Workplace Wellness Think Tank that focused on "Planning the Employer's Role in the NYC Depression Initiative." Participants included the city's commissioner of mental hygiene, health insurers, city and private employee assistance programs, union representation, and executives from several major corporations.
