"I
walked into the support group with much apprehension, and left
each session with new understanding and knowledge, no longer
isolated but now part of an engaged community." Norman
Levy
"Even
your closest friends are unable to understand what it's like to
grow up with a severely mentally ill parent. Meeting other people
who have had a similar experience, the same frustrations and traumas,
can be very comforting. It's also encouraging to see people coping
and managing their lives." Elizabeth Glass
NAMI-NYC Metro
support groups are unique in that they offer a safe space to share
your experiences with mental illness with others who can relate.
Unlike therapy groups, NAMI support groups have no set agenda or
therapeutic goal. Rather, the support group dynamic provides the
opportunity for each participant to choose how they want to use
the group, what they want or need from other group members, and
what they want to give in return.
NAMI-NYC Metro has a successful record of creating and maintaining
groups that coincide with the needs of the community. Groups are
focused on a specific membership in an effort to help people connect
with others who are living with very similar issues, and who may
offer creative and practical solutions to their specific problems.
Group membership may be determined by whether you are a consumer
or a family member, the type of illness you are coping with, and
your relationship to the ill family member.
These groups offer an environment where there are no expectations
other than mutual respect and support. Descriptions
