NAMI-NYC Wellness Chats
A place for anyone who needs to connect. Share how you’re handling life these days – your wellness, your mood…the good, the not-so-good, and the in-between. Share how you’re coping and dealing with anxiety during these challenging times. We all must physically distance, but we can still connect. Every Friday 1pm to 2pm ET.

Family-to-Family (1/15 – 3/5)

Family-to-Family is a free, 8-session class for family, significant others and friends of people living with severe mental illness. It is a designated evidenced-based program. The course is taught by trained family members.

Research shows that graduates gain a greater understanding of mental illness, are able to cope better, worry less, and feel newly empowered to advocate for better treatment and services for their relative. Class topics include:

  • Schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, borderline personality disorder, anxiety disorders, PTSD, and dual diagnosis.
  • Basics about the brain and mental illness.
  • Medication review.
  • Problem-solving and communications skills workshops.
  • Self-care and advocacy.

BEDLAM: Documentary Screening & Panel Discussion

BEDLAM: A Documentary Screening and Panel Discussion

Join us for a screening of “Bedlam”, a feature-length documentary that immerses us in the national crisis surrounding care of people with severe mental illness, followed by a panel discussion featuring speakers with both personal and professional expertise.

Please note: this film contains some disturbing content, including depictions of non-suicidal self-injury and the use of restraints, and discussions of suicide. We are committed to supporting whatever feelings come up for members of our community during the screening.

Knit 2 Unwind

Knitters have known the calming benefits of their craft since knitting began. This group combines knitting lessons, emotional support, and self-care. Experienced knitters can bring their works in progress. Supplies will be provided for new knitters. No experience necessary. 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month, 11am to 12:30pm ET.

This peer-run self-help group offers support and practical information in a welcoming environment. Share your experiences and learn coping strategies from fellow parents. Family & Friends of People with Mood Disorders

Support, sharing of coping strategies, and information for family members and friends of someone with a mood disorder, including: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, cyclothymia, and SAD (seasonal affective disorder). 3rd Monday of the month, 6:30pm to 8:30pm ET.

Illness under mood disorders include: major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder (mania – euphoric, hyperactive, over inflated ego, unrealistic optimism), persistent depressive disorder (long lasting low grade depression), cyclothymia (a mild form of bipolar disorder), and SAD (seasonal affective disorder).
