Communications & Marketing Intern

Approximately 60 million people in the U.S. face the day-to-day reality of managing the symptoms of a mental illness every year.  That’s 1 in 5. And the other 4 are family and friends. The National Alliance on Mental Illness of NYC (NAMI-NYC) helps families and individuals affected by mental illness build better lives through education, support, and advocacy. NAMI-NYC is an affiliate of NAMI, a nation-wide organization of people helping others who are impacted by mental illness in their own lives.

NAMI-NYC seeks a dynamic, self-starter to work on marketing and communications. This internship is an excellent opportunity to experience various aspects of marketing and communications, while working for a well-known community based nonprofit organization. We’re sharing the message that our mission is to support family members and individuals affected by mental illness build better lives. And that you’re not alone.


  • Update and maintain NAMI-NYC’s social media presence
  • Build digital (email/social) graphics for major events hosted by NAMI-NYC
  • Update the NAMI-NYC website
  • Analyze and report on analytics – social, email, and website
  • Participate in weekly marketing meeting
  • Collaborate with staff on new ideas, directions, and venues for marketing and communications


  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must work well independently – we dive into what needs to be done, and so must you.
  • Creative thinker, not afraid to offer up ideas for new ways to reach our audiences.
  • Firm grasp of available tools and platforms in the social media space.
  • Proficiency in Canva, Photoshop, or their ilk. Knowledge of HTML and basic design a plus.
  • Video production skills a plus.
  • Good sense of humor. It makes for a good working environment.
  • Enthusiasm for the mission of NAMI-NYC and the people we serve.

Reports to: Communications – Juen Romanoff

Start Date: Position open until filled, requires an 8 to 10-week commitment, with flexibility for your school requirements.

Hours: At least 16 hours/week, preferably twice a week in the office minimum. Up to 4 hours can be completed at home. Include your availability – days and times – in your cover letter please. We are open from 10-6 M-F.

Compensation: This is an Unpaid internship. Transportation options available.
