Manager of Support Groups – Open Position

Position Title: Manager of Support Groups
Reports to: Associate Executive Director
Hours: 40 hours per week, 10am-6pm Monday through Friday, evening and weekend hours as needed or requested by supervisor

NAMI-NYC helps families and individuals affected by mental illness build better lives through education, support, and advocacy. As one of the largest affiliates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, we work collaboratively with other stakeholders in the community to educate the public, advocate for legislation, reduce stigma and improve the mental health system. NAMI-NYC is seeking an experienced professional to supervise and oversee all support groups and assist with managing office volunteers. Reporting to the Associate Executive Director, the Manager of Support Groups will be primarily responsible for overseeing the NAMI-NYC Support Groups. This includes maintenance of the support group facilitators and operations as well as program development for the growth and ongoing quality improvement of the support groups. These programs are the core of NAMI-NYC’s support system for people living with mental illness and their family members and are a part of a larger network of programs and services offered by NAMI-NYC. The Manager of Support Groups will work collaboratively with the entire programs and services team and the larger NAMI-NYC staff to advance programmatic strategic goals.

Support Groups: NAMI-NYC offers 30+ social and support groups for people living with mental illness and their family members. All support groups are run by NAMI-trained peers. The Manager of Support Groups:

  • Develop formal standard operating procedures, policies and protocols to maximize programmatic efficiency.
  • Enhance the scope and community reach of support groups offered by developing and implementing an outreach strategy to identify and recruit support group facilitators.
  • Create training curriculum, protocols and resources for support group facilitators.
  • Provide supervision and support for support group facilitators
  • Coordinate, maintain and update support group scheduling.
  • Develop new support group materials to enhance the scope of the support groups for both peers and supports.
  • Troubleshoot day to day challenges including scheduling gaps, poor participation, etc. and develop strategies to address these.
  • Develop formal procedures to solicit feedback from participants and support group facilitators to help inform programmatic improvements.
  • Collect, digitize and maintain support group records and analyze data to identify trends and areas of improvement.
  • Oversee and track support group deliverables
  • Report program data and updates to the Associate Executive Director regularly
  • Refine, execute and optimize processes to evaluate program progress and performance and implement follow-up measures when minimum standards are not achieved.
  • Participate in all relevant and/or required internal/external meetings, presentations, conferences, events and/or trainings to advance program goals.
  • Participate in special projects/initiatives upon request
  • Other duties as assigned

Volunteers: NAMI-NYC is a peer, volunteer-based organization. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the organization with over 150 active volunteers supporting NAMI-NYC’s goals and mission.

  • Responsible for recruitment of new volunteers
  • Conduct quarterly (or, as needed) New Volunteer Information Sessions along with Services Team Members for office and program volunteers
  • Review new volunteer applications and identify potential volunteers
  • Conduct ongoing volunteer trainings as needed and requested by Director of Programs and Services

  • Minimum a Masters in Social Work, Counseling, Human Services or related field required
  • 3+ years’ experience in mental health care
  • Experience in program oversight, volunteer coordination and/or training preferred
  • Commitment to NAMI-NYC’s mission
  • Respect and compassion for individuals and families affected by mental illness.
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with mental illness, recovery, and the mental health system – either personally or through a family member
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations with a high level of integrity, diplomacy, and initiative
  • Proficient in the use of personal computers, Google Apps and Microsoft applications and electronic record keeping systems
  • Detail-oriented with strong administrative and organizational skills
  • Experience facilitating groups or helpline background preferred
  • Sense of humor
  • Bilingual Spanish is a plus
