NAMI-NYC seeks a strong, farsighted leader, with a passion for NAMI’s mission, to serve as its Executive Director. The ED will act as the organization’s chief executive, fundraiser, external advocate, and program leader, who will oversee the organization’s growth and programmatic expansion in 2017 and beyond.

In addition to serving as the organization’s key external voice, the Executive Director will manage the development and implementation of NAMI-NYC’s next strategic plan, working with the Board to set goals and develop an operating plan to achieve them. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED will manage the NAMI-NYC team and portfolio of volunteers.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Organizational Leadership

  • In collaboration with the Board of Directors and staff, develop the organization’s next strategic plan, with a focus on continued growth and expansion of programs and services
  • Lead, with support of senior staff, day-to-day operations and staff, with ultimate accountability for the success of the organization
  • Build and mentor a high-performing senior leadership team, hiring and managing a team committed to NAMI-NYC’s work
  • Act as primary liaison to the Board of Directors, engaging Board members in the current and future needs of the organization
  • Develop and manage NAMI-NYC’s annual budget, ensuring that the organization continues to build and maintain a cash surplus while expanding its impact
  • Continue to build and enhance NAMI-NYC’s culture, defined by passion, humility, optimism, collaboration, and results-orientation
  • Energize the organization with a vision for long-term plans to increase NAMI’s status and visibility

External Leadership

  • Serve as the external face of the organization, enhancing NAMI-NYC’s visibility, brand recognition, and credibility; act as a thought leader and advocate in the national movement helping people who live with mental illness
  • Drive fundraising to meet current annual goal of approximately $2 million and maintain the established double-digit growth rate in coming years, ensuring the ongoing engagement of NAMI-NYC’s existing donors while cultivating new ones
  • In partnership with the Board, create and cultivate relationships with major donors (individuals, corporations, and foundations), building a broad base of support and a network of champions for NAMI-NYC’s work
  • Develop and manage strategic relationships with key partners (peer organizations, funding partners, policy makers, managed care organizations, etc.) in order to deepen NAMI-NYC’s reputation as a thought leader
  • Continue to recruit and build the Board to advance NAMI-NYC’s mission and vision

Program Leadership

  • Working closely with the Services Director and Board, provide vision, oversight, and direction for the achievement of NAMI-NYC’s mission by continuing to refine and expand the delivery of services
  • In partnership with staff and Board, develop and enhance systems to monitor and evaluate the impact of NAMI-NYC’s programs, creating a continuous feedback loop to drive improvement of program quality
  • Maintain an ongoing understanding of the movement to a standardized testing environment; apply this understanding to organizational priorities, programmatic offerings, and funding strategies
  • Set the tone for a creative, entrepreneurial approach to program development and improvement


The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • At least 12 years of work experience, including 5 years in a leadership role in a non-profit, mission-driven setting
  • Deep connection to NAMI-NYC mission, with the ability to build rapport with individuals and families living with mental illness
  • Outstanding organizational leadership skills, with an ability to articulate a clear and inspiring vision for NAMI-NYC while managing and mentoring staff
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with a track record of developing strategies in the face of complexity and ambiguity
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to develop strong relationships across a diverse spectrum of stakeholders, and to influence leaders in the private, public, and non-profit sectors
  • Excellent public speaking and communication skills with the ability to serve as a strong external voice for NAMI-NYC and its work
  • Strong appetite to lead fundraising for NAMI-NYC; successful track record of non-profit fundraising preferred
  • Experience overseeing budgets, with the capacity to allocate resources strategically and manage spending against budget
  • A keen intellect, with the ability to be an independent thinker and creative problem solver
  • Clear sense of integrity, with a commitment to ethically and empathically serving individuals and families living with mental illness
  • Master’s degree required
